How much spray foam insulation is needed?

All properties have different requirements so there is no one size fits all solution. Our company does have an absolute minimum recommendation based on the part of the home and whether you’re going with closed cell or open cell foam insulation. In most cases, the minimum is between 2″ – 3″ of closed cell depending on the location or 3 1/2″ – 5 1/2″ of open cell foam. There are areas such as a crawl space where our company will only install closed cell foam due to the waterproof nature of the foam.

Closed-cell vs open-cell in Savannah Georgia

Arguably the only real drawback to closed cell is the price over open cell. It’s generally more than twice the price but at the same time, it offers double the insulation value as open cell so in comparable areas you’re only using half the amount of closed cell as you would open cell. Open cell foam is vapor permeable meaning it is not waterproof whereas closed cell is considered a vapor barrier and does not absorb or allow liquid transmission through the material.

The high-density and superior rigidity of closed cell spray foam insulation adds extra reinforcement and stability to exterior walls or roofing. In fact, according to tests conducted by the National Association of Home Builders, closed-cell spray foam insulation in wall cavity applications improved racking strength 330%-400% over fiberglass insulation. For these reasons, we say closed cell is in most cases the best product but you really can’t go wrong with either if installed correctly and in the right locations.

Is it safe to be in the space while work is being done?

The EPA requires that all work areas remain vacant for a period of 24-hours after installation. spray foam is a two-part chemical with part A being comprised of MDI or methylene diphenyl diisocyanate which is an allergen and sensitizing toxicant, and diisocyanates, in general, are known to cause asthma-like symptoms.
