In Hilton Head Island SC we’re primarily dealing with heat and humidity! Whether you’re looking at spray foam insulation for your attic space, crawl space, or your entire home, foam would only enhance your property! As spray foam contractors we get a lot of questions. Below we go over some of our most frequently asked questions from Hilton Head SC.
Every property is unique and there really is no single solution for everyone. Our company does however have an absolute minimum recommendation based on the part of the home and whether you’re going with closed cell or open cell foam. Let’s say for instance you’re wanting your attic space roof deck foamed… the bare minimum closed cell would be 3″ and 5 1/2″ minimum for open cell. In a crawl space, closed-cell is your only option due to the vapor barrier properties of closed-cell and in most cases we recommend 2″.
After chemical installation, the foam will produce an aroma for approximately 24-hours. Beyond that point, the smell should quickly dissipate. If the foam is in a poorly ventilated attic it will take longer for the smell to completely go away.
Open cell and close cell foam are the two primary types of spray foam insulation. Both products have different strengths and weaknesses, and each has an application that is superior to the other. Closed-cell is a vapor barrier, whereas open-cell is vapor permeable. Another stand-out benefit of closed cell is the additional strength that it adds to a home. Research conducted by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) has shown walls with close-cell spray foam have a racking strength up to 300% greater than walls without it. Closed-cell on roof decks can increase the roof deck uplift resistance by over 3x! It’s actually one of the cheapest options for hurricane proofing a home!
Both open-cell and closed-cell foam can offer an air-tight seal increasing the efficiency of your home. Open-cell has a higher expansion rate than closed-cell increasing the yield and improving installation time. This makes for a slightly cheaper option over closed-cell foam. Both products are great but each has an area where it excels depending on the location of the application.
Spray foam is created by a 2 part chemical reaction. Part A of spray foam is formulated from MDI or methylene diphenyl diisocyanate. MDI is an allergen and sensitizing toxicant, and diisocyanates, in general, are known to cause asthma and lung damage. Some individuals may have a serious reaction when exposed to MDI. The chemicals The EPA requires work areas to be vacant for a period of 24-hours after application.
